Go Forward with Confidence.

Vision

The words on the crest of Island Pacific Academy express a hope we share for children growing up in the 21st century.

I am privileged to lead educators, parents and children coming together to create Island Pacific Academy, an independent, non-sectarian, non-profit college preparatory school for children in pre-kindergarten through grade twelve in West Oahu. Our purpose is to provide children with an academically challenging and developmentally appropriate educational experience led by talented, caring teachers in a nurturing and supportive learning environment. Our goal is to graduate young men and women whose performance matches their abilities and whose values reflect the fundamental virtues of kindness and generosity of spirit.

Island Pacific Academy is a member of the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools and accredited by that organization and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The academic curriculum is consistent with other outstanding independent schools on Oahu, developed in recognition of current brain research about how students learn. Independent schools also share the philosophy of encouraging such values as service to one's community and the development of high moral and ethical personal standards.

IPA is committed to high personal and academic standards for its students. Our talented faculty shares a passion for guiding the intellectual and personal development of each child. Our class size permits individual attention by teachers to each student's needs. The child centered learning environment in each classroom provides a nurturing, structured, stimulating environment that promotes inquiry, creativity and critical thinking, along with the acquisition of important fundamental skills and knowledge to prepare students for future success.

Students progress through a cohesive curriculum that offers a breadth of academic subjects and encourages students to experience fine and performing arts, community service and athletic opportunities. The IPA program fosters self-esteem through individual attention to each student's talents and learning styles, enabling "personal best" performance, another key to future success.

Academic achievement without a personal context is hollow knowledge, however. Integral to the school's philosophy are such core values as:

  • The power of human kindness
  • Trust and respect
  • Generosity of spirit
  • Recognition of each individual's value
  • Highest level of ethical standards within the school community.

Students guided by such values develop strength of character and become good citizens of their communities, nation and, indeed, the world, which is another measure of success.

In short, the goal of IPA is to prepare students with the confidence to assume that graduation from the school is not an end, but a key to all doors in their future which they may enter with confidence.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daniel E. White

School History

Island Pacific Academy was founded in 2003 and enrolled its first students in September 2004. The concept of an independent, college preparatory, non-sectarian school in Kapolei had been advanced by the Campbell Estate for a number of years.

Under the leadership of Larry Caster, President of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Daniel White was retained as the founding headmaster to begin planning the curriculum and program elements of the school and establish the various systems necessary to open the school in 2004.

Many of the founding faculty members were identified in the summer of 2003 and began meeting monthly with Headmaster White to plan a clear scope and sequence for language arts and mathematics instruction, as well as social studies and science curriculum. From the start, a commitment was made to employ specialists for studio art, music, and foreign language instruction along with physical education, beginning with Kindergarten.

Equally important in the school culture is a commitment to develop in each student a strength of character that includes cooperation, kindness and respect toward others. Developing an environment where children feel physically and emotionally safe to learn and grow is an important part of our mission.

In 2005-2006, IPA had 370 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Eight, with two Pre-K, and three Kindergarten classes, and two classes of each of the remaining grades. In 2006-2007, the school completed construction on a second building which houses the Middle and Upper School programs, and provides a multi-purpose performing arts space. Grade 9 was added in 2006-2007. One grade level will be added each year thereafter, until instruction is offered through grade 12 beginning in 2009-2010.

IPA is accredited by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. IPA is licensed by the Hawaii Council of Private Schools and is a Member of HAIS.
