Junior Kindergarten: Spelling

At IPA we use a combination of the Orton Gillingham and Spalding phonics based spelling programs. We have blended the two and added supplemental materials to create our own program which is comprehensive, multi-sensory, intensive, sequential and systematic. The objective of our spelling program is to enable students to connect spelling rules to reading. We aim to provide students with an array of strategies for attacking unfamiliar words, investigating spelling rules and patterns and understanding when to apply these. The elementary spelling program incorporates key words, sounds, spelling rules and 91 basic phonograms. Our intention is that this fun, interactive program will help students learn the phonetic base of language through listening, speaking, reading, writing, and spelling in a meaningful and effective way.
