IPA’s Volunteer Extraordinaire: Jay Monday

How do you thank a volunteer who pretty much puts in a regular work day every day? We celebrate and thank a man we all affectionately call “Grandpa Jay” every chance we get, and receive so much in return.

Headmaster Dr. Dan White joined others on campus recently in wishing him well on the occasion of his 77th birthday. Just a few days after that milestone, Monday celebrated with his wife, Marilyn, a 52nd wedding anniversary.

Raised in rural Missouri, Monday learned many mechanical and handyman skills over the years. His experience and expertise has come to the rescue many times at IPA. He’s the go-to person when an unusual repair job comes up.

For the past four years Monday has been at school almost every day of the school year, arriving with grandson Nalu Paz (`19) at 8:00 a.m. and working until the end of the school day.

Broken lock? Plugged plumbing? Chair leg loose? Something spilled on the floor? Monday takes it all in stride. He will modestly say he’s just glad to have something useful to do. But here at IPA we know how much we’ve come to rely on his friendly smile and helping hand. He looks kind of official in some special shirts that were embroidered for him that say it all: “Volunteer Extraordinaire.”

At IPA, parents, grandparents—like “Grandpa Jay,” other relatives and friends of the school, along with students and staff give of their time, energy and talent in myriad ways throughout the year. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any nonprofit organization. We deeply appreciate all the ways so many people volunteer their time in service to the school. IPA would not be the same without you!
