There’s a new instructional model that has teachers flipping! It’s called the “Flipped Classroom,” and it is one more great teaching strategy in a teacher’s repertoire that facilitates student learning. It flips around the traditional model of a classroom (where a teacher lectures in front of a room) and creates meaningful, 21st century learning experiences for students.

Two members of the Class of 2012 are the first IPA students to be admitted to a US Military Academy program. Christian Burgos-Sanchez will be headed to the US Military Academy at West Point, while Amirah Majied will call Colorado Springs home in the fall as she enrolls in the US Air Force Academy Prep School. Zenith – the summit, high point, culmination. Zenith - literary magazine at Island Pacific Academy, aptly named because it collects some of the best student writing and visual art by students at Island Pacific Academy. Though it began last year as a publication just for work from students in grades 9-12, this year it was expanded to include material from grades 6-8 and alumni, as well.

In its first year of existence, the upper school Robotics Team, emerged from the Hawaii Regional FIRST Robotics Competition on March 23-24 as one of the three schools in the winning team. The NaviBots (IPA’s school nickname is the Navigators) have thereby earned an invitation to the FIRST World Competition in St. Louis, Missouri, April 25-28.

Demonstrating the old adage that “practice makes perfect,” senior Jaymie-Rae Martin took first place in the campus Poetry Out Loud contest held on February 28. This was Martin’s fourth year to enter the contest. Martin now advances to the state competition held on March 18 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the Tenney Theatre at St. Andrews Cathedral in Honolulu.
